Spirited away has a way of keeping you hooked with its unique concept. From the characters we’ve never seen and cannot forget, to the whole different world which makes us curious of what might be next.
As a kid, we’ve always been taught to be scared of spirits but this anime shows a totally different side of them. They are very artistically made which attracts us and keeps us interested.
Spirited Away is heavily influenced by Japanese Shinto-Buddhist folklore. The movie starts with a young girl Chihiro Ogino moving to a new place with her parents but mistakenly ends up in an abandoned theme park. The theme park is actually a world of spirits. Her parents are spirited away with the curiosity and excitement about the park and end up eating foods prepared for the customers of the spirits. The spirit gets angry and turns them into a pig.
I believe turning them into a pig is brilliant since it symbolizes their nature of acting as animals once they see the food.
Now Chihiro is the only human all alone in the world of spirits, and she is trying to save her parents and get back home. Along with Chihiro, this anime takes our spirit away to the world they have created as we act the same as the main character, we get surprised, shocked, curious and excited. We are spirited away and thus we set a journey to the world we know nothing about but we want to know everything about.
I believe the main character, Chihiro is brilliantly created as we feel so attached to her. She’s not a mere character anymore. We see a part of ourselves in her, the part which is struggling hard in a whole different world, peoples, and environment. We cannot help but feel attached to her. We feel panicked, sad, happy and proud of her as she never breaks down even in intense situations.
Another reason why this anime has a long-lasting effect is because of its characters, the characters like Haku, No face, Yubaba, Zeniba, Kamaji are unforgettable and they leave a very deep impression in our heart.
Not only this but the anime also shows the harsh truth of greed in humans, pollution caused by humans, corruption, jealousy through its characters which is very relatable and we can almost link some of the characters with peoples we know in our day to day life.
But the main beauty of this anime is its simplicity. Although the anime shows a totally different world from ours we don’t find it chaotic and we almost feel like we’ve always been there.
The title fits the anime perfectly as while watching it our body might be here but our mind-spirits away to the world of spirits and not only Chihiro but we too set off on a truly beautiful adventure.
Also, the anime ends with a beautiful song that covers up the anime artistically with very touching lyrics. The anime is totally worth watching. It’s almost like stepping to an adventure to a whole new world and we get spirited away with its beauty.
Overall the anime engraves a beautiful long-lasting feeling in our hearts and send off a sweet message that if we are honest, caring and hardworking no matter what situation, sooner or later people around us will surely appreciate it.
