After the era of great animes like The promised neverland and Dororo has ended, We are left with high expectations from the upcoming animes. So what can we look forward to?
Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) is the next hyped anime with its thrilling story plot and various unique characters. It is based on a Japanese manga series by Koyoharu Gotōge.
The anime starts on a snowy day. A young boy is shown to be carrying his sister named Nezuko, who seems to be barely alive. The traditional Japanese backdrop intensifies the whole scene. The good voice acting and direction of the anime hooks you since the very beginning.
The story continues with the flashback, which is a great way to present an anime since we’re already curious about what is happening. Who is this young boy? What happened to his sister? Will he be able to save her?
The flashback is different from the present. The seemingly nervous young boy is Tanjirou, who is the eldest son of a fatherless family consisting of 7 members. Nezuko is shown as a caring and lovely person. Overall it’s a happy family.
Tanjirou is a helpful, kind, reliable and hardworking person with a great sense of smell. He is shown to be loved by everyone.
The story becomes intense after Tanjirou stays out one night only to find his whole family slaughtered and drenched in blood later in the morning. We saw the horror of the man-eating demons right after it’s mentioned in the anime.
Nezuko is the only one who is barely alive, so he is taking her to a doctor. I loved how the main protagonist was quick to act on such a dreadful moment.
Now back to the present, Nezuko isn’t the same person she was before. She has turned into a demon but she still has little consciousness left in her.
Suddenly a demon hunter named Giyu Tomioka attacks Nezuko. Although he seems to be sympathetic towards Tanjirou, his experience tells him to kill Nezuko. He believes that she hasn’t eaten a human yet but the demon in her can’t be trusted and thinks that Tanjirou is too weak to protect himself.
In my point of view, Giyu is a well-written character, he was sympathetic but cold too. He was experienced and understanding of the situation and quick to act too.
So when Tanjirou surprises him with his wit and Nezuko shows her consciousness Giyu feels that maybe this sibling is different from others he has met. So, he helps them and suggests them to meet a person named Sakonji Urokodaki.
Later Tanjirou buries their family members and walks towards a new path suggested by Giyu, hand in hand with Nezuko which is a very beautiful scene.
The first episode of the anime is named cruelty which I believe sums up the whole episode in a word.
The first episode is straight to the story plot and creates a very mysterious thrilling vibe. We’re left with questions as Will Tanjirou be able to save Nezuko? Who is the person Giyu suggested? And how will their story end? Will it be tragic just as a first episode or will they be able to change this fate they’ve met in this very first episode?
Tanjirou wants to turn his sister into a human again and take revenge but he’s dealing with demons. As the saying goes, we either die a hero or live long enough to turn into a villain. So, will Tanjirou become a hero or turn into a demon himself?
Overall the anime looks promising with great soundtracks and visuals. The story is very thrilling while the art style is beautiful with the use of aesthetic vibrant colors. The ending of the anime presents various new characters which make us excited about what might come ahead.
Demon Slayer has the full potential to fulfill our expectations left behind by other great animes this season.
